The National Transplantation Office under the Ministry of Health (NTB) reports on the cargo of priceless value that has reached Lithuania. November 9 of this year at 11 p.m. 57 min. In Santariškių Ring in Vilnius, after the Police stopped the traffic, a helicopter of the Military Air Force (KOP) of the Lithuanian Armed Forces landed. The aircraft with the VUL SK medical team flew from Kaunas and after the explantation, they flew back the donor organ from Warsaw (Poland), which, thanks to the relatives of the person who left this world, will give the recipient in Lithuania hope for recovery.
More than 300 people are currently waiting for donor organs and tissues in Lithuania. To save the lives of recipients, NTB is also looking for donor organs abroad on the international donor organ exchange platform FOEDUS, which hosts offers or requests for donor organs. “If the organ meets the set criteria and is suitable for the waiting recipient in Lithuania, then the only real possibility to bring it to Lithuania is air transport,” says NTB head A. BĹ«ziuvienÄ—.
According to A. BĹ«ziuvienÄ—, the National Transplant Office is constantly trying to strengthen relations with colleagues from abroad. “In September, we had a meeting with our colleagues in Poland from Poltransplant (Polish Transplant Coordination Center). I am glad that the meeting was constructive and we can already celebrate the first results of cooperation”.
In order to help recipients waiting for donor organs and tissues, in September NTB also renewed a cooperation agreement with the Air Force, according to which the geography of flights was expanded. “From now on, KOP can help fly in donor organs not only from Latvia but also from further European countries. Among them: Poland, Germany or the Czech Republic”, says the NTB director.
It is estimated that KOP helicopters took off and landed a total of 6 times last year. And this year alone, aircraft rushed to the aid of recipients 8 times.
The transportation of donor organs and tissues is one of the peacetime tasks of the Lithuanian army, which is carried out by the military units on permanent standby assigned to the operational forces of the peacetime tasks.
Thank you to all participants in the donation and transplantation process: international partners, doctors, laboratory specialists, Lithuanian police officers, Lithuanian army and Lithuanian Air Force.
Sincere condolences and thanks to the relatives of the deceased Donor. There can be nothing more noble than to save the lives of those who are seriously ill after losing a loved one.
