April 22 (UPI) — Acclaimed Australian comedian Barry Humphries has died in Sydney at the age of 89, his family confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
Best known for his characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, Humphrey. was in the hospital with complications from hip surgery last month. It fell in February.
Humphries died peacefully surrounded by his family.
For 89 years, Barry Humphries has entertained us through many personas, from Dame Edna to Sandy Stone.
But the brightest star in that galaxy has always been Barry.
A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-a-kind, he was both a gift and a gift.

“He was completely himself to the end, never losing his brilliant mind, unique wit and generosity of spirit,” his family said. statement by the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

His Dame Edna persona took Humphries to the top of British television in the 1970s and eventually secured her Dame Edna Everage experience on the talk show in the 1980s.
He is also well known for his character of Sir Les Paterson, who has been a staple of Humphries’ stage presence for three decades.
Although many viewers know him best from television, Humphries was also a prominent theater actor and supporter of all forms of the arts.
“While he may be best remembered for his work in the theater, he was a painter, writer, poet, collector and lover of art in all its forms,” his family said. “He was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and confidant to many.
Condolences poured in as news of his death spread.
