May 25 (UPI) — One of the world’s most wanted genocide fugitives has been arrested after more than 20 years, according to the United Nations.
The UN’s residual mechanism for international criminal tribunals announced that Fulgence Kayishema was arrested on Wednesday in Parle, South Africa.
“Fulgens Kayishema ran for more than 20 years. His arrest ensures that he will finally be tried for his alleged crimes. Genocide is the most serious crime known to mankind,” said the chief prosecutor. Serge Brammertz said.
in 2001 The UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda accused him of direct involvement in the 1994 April 15 in the Nyange Catholic Church Massacre, killing more than 2,000 Tutsi men, women, elderly and children who directly participated in the massacre.
The case was handed over to the Rwandan authorities in 2012.
The killers, including Kayishema, are accused of burning down a church and then bulldozing a building where refugees were being buried.
According to the indictment, the bodies were moved from the church grounds to mass graves.
