June 6 (UPI) — Pope Francis made a brief visit to the hospital Tuesday for a check-up after a recent health problem.
Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See’s press office, told reporters that Francis went to the Gemelli University Polyclinic in Rome for tests “and returned to the Vatican before noon.”
The inspection comes after Francis was hospitalized with a bronchial infection on March 29 and discharged on April 1.
Francis’ health is a concern as he has required a wheelchair during his state visit to South Sudan and public events.
In 2021, Pranciškus had part of his colon removed at Gemelli Hospital.
In 2022, Francis offered to consider slowing down his pace and possibly retiring after the procedure.
His predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, opened the door to an exit after he retired citing health issues, becoming the first pope in 600 years.
